I attended Refresh DC last night and the topic was Getting Serious with Freelancing, covered by Martin Ringlein, co-founder of nclud. I really enjoyed the presentation and left with some great resources to check out. I was impressed with freelanceswitch.com - whether you take on 1 or 100 freelance projects in a given year, this site offers steller advice, jobs, resources, and insightful forums. There were also two books mentioned which are worth a look - “The Business Side of Creativity” and Talent Is Not Enough: Business Secrets For Designers. Happy Freelancing!

Stop eatin’ people’s old french fries, pigeon.

Have some self respect!

A List Apart describes itself as ‘a web magazine for people who make websites.’ I try to find time every week to check out new articles or some I’ve missed in the past. This article, by Jeffrey Zeldman, is one of my favorites: Understanding Web Design. Also, I must mention Kevin Cornell who does all the wonderful Illustration work - if you haven’t checked out his stuff, have a look.
‘Web design is the creation of digital environments that facilitate and encourage human activity; reflect or adapt to individual voices and content; and change gracefully over time while always retaining their identity.’

Jack: “Lemon I’m impressed, you’re beginning to think like a businessman.”

Liz: “A business woman.”

Jack: “I don’t think that’s a word.

I recently discovered this fabulous product called FLOR. I stumbled upon it on dooce and have become somewhat obsessed ever since. It is modular carpet tile, so you can create your own rugs in any style or size you want. Besides the fact it is totally practical, they offer so many beautiful patterns and textures, you’re bound to find one that suits your personal taste. Also, the samples are cheap, so you can test out a bunch before committing…in the past two months, I have ordered about 20 - I figure I’ll make use of all these samples for a mat in the garage or for our future dog:) I always struggle to find a rug I love and now I can just create my own!
